“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
-Michelangelo

my mouth literally fell open. stunning.

Not to say the Michelangelo wasn’t a total genius, but the idea that he just started chipping at a piece of marble and “TA-DA, brilliant sculpture appears!” is horseshit. He liked saying that because it made him more mysterious, which in turn made his work more desirable. The man made tons of sketches and miniature sculpture studies before starting on the real marble because hey, marble wasn’t exactly cheap. He destroyed most of his practice sculptures so the real things would be worth more. Michelangelo wasn’t some magical art creature, he did his research and careful planning just like any other good artist. That means you can do it too, kids! That said, he still rocked that chisel like it was no one’s business.

:] Michelangelo is my favourite; I like him even more than Da Vinci because he sculpted and his sculptures are absolutely stunning.
